The sixty year old Hotel Nacional de Cuba has attracted world renowned individuals such as British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, artists Frank Sinatra, Ava Gardner, Johnny Weismuller, Maria Félix, Jorge Negrete, and scientist Alexander Flemming. During the 19th century, the hill on where the hotel is situated, witnessed the famous battery of Santa Clara . The “Ordoñez” cannon, one of the largest of its time, still lies in the hotel’s gardens. In 1992, the five star hotel underwent general restoration preserving all of its distinctive, art deco, and neoclassical décor while adding modern elements. Today, guests will be intrigued by the galleries of the gardens that recall monastic cloisters of Moorish-Spanish arcades and the main hall resembling three parallel aisles of a Medieval church.
